Animerica – VHS and Laserdisc Release Calendar – Urotsukidoji II – November 1993

March 3, 2012 by Lance Heiskell Leave a Comment

In this issue, CPM’s Anime 18 gives us a second lashing of Tentacle Porn with Urotsukidoji II.

Premiere magazine quote “Cartoons so imaginatively demented that they would make Walt Disney spin in his cryogenic chamber…”

My head hurt while trying to read the copy for this ad. I was going “Huh…what…really?”

At least the grammar police didn’t give them a ticket for this running sentence: “In this sequel to Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend (aka The Wandering Kid), the most controversial animated feature film of all time, the unbelievable sexual violence of the Overfiend and his cohorts from Hell continues to wreak havoc on Earth-who can’t stop this relentless onslaught?

Next ad we have is VIZ’s first ad for their new label VIZ Video – Ranma 1/2 – 9 volumes with 2 episodes in English for $29.95 each.

What I love is the main call-out in the ad is “Now in Digitally Recorded Hi-Fi Stereo!” STEREO!!

The page with the Cybernet (so 90s using cyber) is a video release schedule for November 1993. VIZ, US Manga Corps, Streamline Pictures, Anime 18, Animeigo, A.D. Vision, Dark Image Entertainment were the companies at this time supplying anime to North America. Mostly subbed or dubbed VHS with some LaserDisc releases.

My favorite ad comes from Kimono My House – “WEIRD STUFF!” is a highlight of the ad and their business hours amuse me “usually open Fri-Sat 11-6”

So if you want weird stuff and you live near Berkley and it’s near the weekend, you’re in luck, usually.

To wrap this issue up, we have the ad for Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle for the Super NES. Nice use of the manga to help sell the game.

Practice Makes Awesome

A Few Tips Upon Reading

First off, find a secluded area and pour yourself a beverage of choice. You must cleanse the palate to take in the delicacies of the nostalgia I'm about to throw down.

Second, if it’s cold where you live, grab a blanket, maybe two. If at all possible, sit down while reading. I hate standing, never stood for it, never will.

Finally, see if you can find the encrypted message left in the third magazine post.
