Surprise! Another Sailor Moon cover. Anime winks creep me out. They look so odd.
Highlights:
Peacock King – Spirit Warrior – Still amazes me that there are commercial anime releases that I’ve never heard of.
The focus of this issue is convention season.
Anime Expo 1997 – July 4-6 1997 (3 days not 4) – 1,200 person-long reg line on Friday with a 3 hour wait – SEE Nothing changes 😉 (barcode reg is shortening everything including Dragon*Con) Total Attendance at Anime Expo 1997 was an estimated 3,600. Times that number by 10 and some change and you have the attendance increase in the past 15 years.
Katsucon 3 – March 7-9 1997. Virginia Beach, VA – My sister when to this convention. She drove from Lubbock, TX – that’s 1,700 or a 28 hour drive. WOW. Here is a scan of her badge:
Project A-Kon 8 – Dallas, TX – no con report but some of these photos are from the con.
Next up is a page illustrating the way a Neon Genesis Evangelion manga page is converted to 1990’s comic book standards. Take a look at the extent of adaptation that had to be made back then. So glad this is not the case now. Left to Right flipping is a thing of the past.

HUH? The DVD has better picture, dual language tracks yet the subtitled VHS sold for a $5 premium? That is bat shit crazy.
ADV Films offering this month offers a title that I have never heard of: “Debutante Detective Corps” Wow. Check this trailer from ADV – Fun writing and fan service.
Did you know that Katsuhiro Otomo’s Steamboy movie was first announced in Animerica August 1997? This movie didn’t release in Japan until 2004.
I found your page/site because of a Goggle search, and wow all I can say is this really takes me back.
With that said I am commenting because I never expected to see the fan art I did way back 1997 online, that one really does that me back.
My piece of fan art is the one in the middle of the last page posted, it is meant to be mash-up of Unicron from Transformers and Chibiusa, but back then I know her as Rini, so the name of the piece is Rinicron.
When I first saw it published back than in the magazine I was quite surprised because I really didn’t think it was all that good, I still have the magazine, but it is cool to see it and find it online.
Wonderful!
