Animerica – Rumiko Takahashi – Matthew Sweet Girlfriend Cobra AMV – Anime Expo – April 1993

February 22, 2012 by Lance Heiskell 2 Comments

Surprise! How about some Rumiko Takahashi? I kid, I kid. If you’ve read Animerica long enough and you know that VIZ publishes all of the mangaka’s work, of course it would be in your best interest to showcase it. I would. Maison Ikkoku is my favorite – by far.

Another trend you will see is that US Manga Corps, a Central Park label, pretty much booked the C2 position for ads for issues to come. That’s media buying lingo. C2 is front inside cover, C3 is back inside cover and C4 is back cover. (cause knowledge is power!)

First Appearance Ads: Anime Expo

Anime Expo 1993 half page ad. Check Issue 3 for to see a full page ad. I graduated high school in 1993 – pre-internet, living in a small Texas Panhandle town where the locals got the cable company to replace MTV with CMT – Country Music Television – Not as tolerant for smart geeky people who want the cool and different. That’s what college was for.

The article I resonate most with is “Matthew Sweet, ‘The Highest-Profile Otaku in the World” article. His “Girlfriend” music video was an AMV. That song and music video had heavy influence on me. First, I’ve been a fan of his music ever since, I just got his latest album. Also, Space Adventure Cobra looked awesome and sparked my curiosity for anime, but being in a small town near nothing, doesn’t allow for much discovery pre-internet. My town didn’t even have a Wal-Mart.

Here watch the Matthew Sweet video. Still one of the best AMVs.

Going completely off-topic here, but there used to be a CMT Europe. When we first got cable in the 90s it was on pretty much whenever we weren’t watching something else on TV, and we were gutted when it was withdrawn.

A Few Tips Upon Reading

First off, find a secluded area and pour yourself a beverage of choice. You must cleanse the palate to take in the delicacies of the nostalgia I'm about to throw down.

Second, if it’s cold where you live, grab a blanket, maybe two. If at all possible, sit down while reading. I hate standing, never stood for it, never will.

Finally, see if you can find the encrypted message left in the third magazine post.
