Bio-Booster Armor Guyver is this month’s cover
In January 94, I was a freshman in college. That was the month Babylon 5 premiered on syndicated tv. I was more into sci-fi, alt-rock and Kevin Smith type indie movies at that time. Not yet into anime.
In 1994 you will see a growing ramp up in anime – This is VIZ’s first full year of home video, US Renditions, L.A Hero, ADV now has 4 titles under their belt and primed for more, Animeigo is steady and CPM has a new title every month it seems. And now…
PIONEER is HERE!
Not 1 but 2 Pioneer ads in this issue.
First ad is…you guessed it Tenchi Muyo! The tagline reads “Follow the adventures of Tenchi Masaki, our red blooded hero as he battles…girls!”
This ad was a little technical in explaining the value of LaserDisc over VHS – “All episodes are CAV for jitter free still frames and full stereo bilingual soundtracks with original Japanese dialog and English dub plus subtitles through closed captioning.”
Episode 1 on Laserdisc was $34.95 SRP
$34.95 for 1 episodes. Fans need to quit crying about today’s prices.
The second ad promotes Tenchi Muyo! plus Green Legend Ra Episode 1 and Moldiver Episode 1.
Remember in this time VHS anime was 2 episodes per tape for around $29.98 and LaserDisc was 1 episode for $34.98.
So for the ad was more of a sales piece for the superiority of LaserDisc to VHS.
The tagline was “If you haven’t seen it on laserdisc, you haven’t seen it” (ooookay…)
Laserdisc: 425 lines of resolution, pure digital sound, 60% sharper than VHS and no tape wear and tear.
