Animerica – Patlabor Mobile Police – Fatal Fury – Eagle Riders – October 1996

July 5, 2012 by Lance Heiskell Leave a Comment

I finally have all of Patlabor – the OVA’s, TV series and the three movies. This issue helps explain where to start and the differences over each.

The Pioneer ad for the Tenchi Muyo TV series has Mihoshi and Kiyone as the focus of the ad. Curious that they didn’t go with Tenchi and the harem.

The VIZ Video ad for Fatal Fury has not one but two burst call outs. One titled “Three tapes of martial arts action!” the second reads “Includes coupon for a free Fatal Fury poster.” Let me guess that the poster was “free” but you had to pay for postage.

Ryoga is on the cover of this month’s Ranma 1/2 VHS. So much Ranma. So, so much.

This Ani-Mayhem ad is pure hype. Check out the tag line: “Now Selling Out In A Store Near You!”

It’s still amazing that 1/3 of all the anime fan art in each issue is Sailor Moon.

The AnimeXpress in this issue covers Dragon Ball Z and Eagle Riders going into TV syndication. People forget how important syndication was in the 90’s. It really doesn’t exists these days. Syndication meant that you could be in a city were a show aired Saturdays at 5PM and then travel to visit your parents and discover that the same show airs at 7:30am on Thursdays. There were no national airtimes. Cable took care of this later on.

Dark Warrior Jihad would not be a very PC name for an anime in 2012. 1996? It’s OK.

Check out the sweep 90’s fashion trends with this Anime voice actor group shot in the Anime convention tour page.

Practice Makes Awesome

A Few Tips Upon Reading

First off, find a secluded area and pour yourself a beverage of choice. You must cleanse the palate to take in the delicacies of the nostalgia I'm about to throw down.

Second, if it’s cold where you live, grab a blanket, maybe two. If at all possible, sit down while reading. I hate standing, never stood for it, never will.

Finally, see if you can find the encrypted message left in the third magazine post.
