Animerica – Mobile Suit Gundam 20th Anniversary – Ah My Goddess Fan Art – October 1998

March 19, 2013 by Lance Heiskell Leave a Comment

This month’s cover feature is the 20th Anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam. In 1998, Gundam finally gets released in the US by Bandai Entertainment via Anime-Village.com Tons of ads in this issue, some great some really, really bad. Let’s enjoy this time machine, shall we?

Highlights:

  • This month’s Anime Focus section had a new voice actor interview – Tiffany Grant. If you’ve watched anime for years, you already know about her talent. It’s fun to read this interview from 1998 – just went anime is beginning to ramp up in fandom.
  • Next is cheesy headline time from ADV “This is the anime your mother warned you about” OHHHHhhh!!!! Ruin Explorers 2 is so controversial!
  • I love that VIZ markets their Ranma 1/2 Movie 2 – Nihao My Concubine as “DVD Special Edition”
  • VIZ ad for its PULP graphic novels. PULP is another VIZ publication for manga.
  • Anime That Time Forgot: Hurricane Polymar, Maps, The Heroic Legend of Arslan, Dark Warrior,
  • What? A reluctant hero has to defend his homeland? How original! The Heroic Legend of Arslan from CPM
  • This month has 3 pages of anime fan art – Halloween themed and a section for Ah My Goddess fan art with lots of Belldandy and Urd.
  • The worst – W O R S T – worst ad is for Gamers Republic magazine. Clearly the marketing department who created this ad does not know their reader audience. Also, why have an order form where you GIVE OUT YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION?!?!?!
  • The best ad design goes for Fushigi Yugi TV series.
  • The worst VHS cover goes to ADV for Delinquent in Drag. WTF?
  • Finally, more Chroma Cel pictures that are not actually animation cels but consumers bought the gimmick anyway.

Practice Makes Awesome

A Few Tips Upon Reading

First off, find a secluded area and pour yourself a beverage of choice. You must cleanse the palate to take in the delicacies of the nostalgia I'm about to throw down.

Second, if it’s cold where you live, grab a blanket, maybe two. If at all possible, sit down while reading. I hate standing, never stood for it, never will.

Finally, see if you can find the encrypted message left in the third magazine post.
