Animerica – Hayao Miyazaki Cover Feature – Viz Video – Battle Angel OVA – July 1993

February 29, 2012 by Lance Heiskell 2 Comments

Cover feature was Hayao Miyazaki. This is years before Princess Mononoke and Disney’s exclusive deal to bring all of Studio Ghibli to the states. Porco Rosso is referenced as The Crimson Pig. I still haven’t watch enough of Miyazaki’s films. Perhaps this project will get me to spend a couple of evenings of movie watching to catch up.

An article “Back to Viz-ness With New Video Line” (can’t pass up a pun) states that VIZ will start a new video imprint called VIZ Video as early as November 1993. Mermaid’s Scar and Ranma 1/2 were mentioned as the two titles they will start to release. This is big news you get from magazine. This news didn’t immediately online and posted to news sites or social networks like Twitter. The way this news spread was most likely through anime clubs, zines, IRC chat, Prodigy, AOL and Compuserve message boards. (I miss the word zines)

The back cover features an OVA which I wish I could watch, be it not for James Cameron and rights issues. Battle Angel on VHS August 21st 1993 from A.D.Vision. Two 30-minute OVA episodes with English subtitles.

First Appearance Ad: Dark Image Entertainment – I like their content warning “All contain profanity and violence” Yeeeeaaaah! Sign me up!

Also when I read the cover for US Manga Corps “Harmagedon” I revert to my adolescent brain and call it “Harma-gettin-it-on” Ahhh yeah…

Hello, I wonder if you could help me. I am looking for either a ad or a fan art drawing that I came across in one of the issues of Animerica. I did have it photocopied, but sadly it got ruin by water. Why am I looking for this certain picture? Simple, I liked the image so much I wish to have it tattoo’d on me. The image was of a chibi demon girl ontop of a chibi boy. Now he could have been an angel, but I plumb forgot. And I can’t recall if it was part of a ad or just a fan art. I believe it would be in one of the ’94 issues. Can’t be to sure as I was just borrowing it from a friend back in ’02. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve scanned every ad and every fan art page from 1994. If you can’t find it, maybe it was in 1995?

A Few Tips Upon Reading

First off, find a secluded area and pour yourself a beverage of choice. You must cleanse the palate to take in the delicacies of the nostalgia I'm about to throw down.

Second, if it’s cold where you live, grab a blanket, maybe two. If at all possible, sit down while reading. I hate standing, never stood for it, never will.

Finally, see if you can find the encrypted message left in the third magazine post.
