Animerica – El Hazard AMV – Ryo-Oh-Ki – 801 T.T.S. Airbats – July 1995

May 6, 2012 by Lance Heiskell Leave a Comment

El Hazard is on the cover for July.

El Hazard was introduced to me through AMVs. Still to this day, there is not a convention Anime Music Video contest that doesn’t have a scene of El Hazard. The primary scene is when Jinnai has the mic and talks directly to the camera screen – lots of editors use that scene. The two best in my opinion are the AMV “This Video Goes to Eleven” by Anime Rudeboy Productions and “Jinnai and the Bugrom” by Studio Hybrid

I think this GoShogun ad is the least amount of text for a US Manga Corps ad.

I scanned the “From the Editor” pages since I think it’s important for you to read it. Trish Ledoux was Animerica’ first editor. This article goes after the misinformed thinking of anime fans who thought Animerica was a VIZ hype magazine. Trish explains why this is wrong thinking.

One of the reasons I decided to do this Anime Archive project is to shed light on this formative time of American anime culture. I can’t imagine the number of anime fans who got hooked into the fandom by reading Animerica in the 90’s. (followed by Anime Insider and NewtypeUSA in the 2000s) I do have Protoculture Addicts magazines and I do plan on including them (in case you are wondering)

Planet Anime’s July 1995 ad is the first anime ad to include an email address. I love that it doesn’t say email. It’s “internet: planet@sam.neosoft.com” Sad to say that Planet Anime is not around anymore.

I also had to scan the “Justify My Love! Take the Ryo-Oh-Ki Challenge” to win the cabbit plush that EVERYONE eventually owned. This Ryo-Oh-Ki vs Pikachu plush battle from Evangelion ReDeath is perfect. Start at 7:52 of the video to watch the fight.

The 801 T.T.S. Airbats ad by AD Vision proves that ADV can make any anime pervy through copy. Note that this is probably the first ADV ad without the “Warning: contains nudity”

Copy from Airbats ad:
“They’re not bad girls. They’re just plane crazy!”
“From the creator of Rei Rei, comes a high flying comedy…”
“…and brother, do these aces have curves in all the right places!”
“When these lovely ladies slip into a warm cockpit, the air to air action gets as hot as it can get!”
“adventure at nose-bleed-inducing altitudes”

A Few Tips Upon Reading

First off, find a secluded area and pour yourself a beverage of choice. You must cleanse the palate to take in the delicacies of the nostalgia I'm about to throw down.

Second, if it’s cold where you live, grab a blanket, maybe two. If at all possible, sit down while reading. I hate standing, never stood for it, never will.

Finally, see if you can find the encrypted message left in the third magazine post.
