Hot pants and Go-Go boots plaster this months issue of Animerica. I need to pick up Right Stuf’s reissue of Dirty Pair. The interview in the article is quite good. The ad? Well…
By now, you’ve seen the pattern in early to mid 90’s VHS and Laserdisc anime ads – Too much description copy and long verbose taglines/headlines:
“The Dirty Pair – The action is non-stop and the humor-both verbal and visual – is totally refreshing, outrageous and thrilling. Haruka Takachiho’s popular stormy, sexy space sleuths represent anime at its best”
This reads more like a quote than a tagline. The Streamline ad also has Golgo 13 renamed “The Professional”
A.D. Vision is still at it with innuendo with Dragon Knight:
“Magic Swords, Enchanted Castles, Damsels in Distress…and an Instant Camera? It’s all in a Hard Knight’s Day!”
WTF? That is so random. Why would this headline get me to buy the series.
It doesn’t. The image sells the show. These ads from the 90’s suffer from way to much text.
ADV’s warning “WARNING!!! Contains NUDITY ADULT SITUATIONS and lots of NAUGHTY BITS!”
OK…that copy probably sold the show as well.
Next, take a look at Dr Comics and Mr Games ad. Best representation of what was available and what they cost. In this time of anime prices were at SRP. Nowadays, no one pays full retail price. The part that warms my geek heart is that retailer is in business to this day. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dr-Comics-Mr-Games/146860132056250
