Impressive second issue for Animag. I bought a bunch of back issues from Lone Star Comics through their site – I am discovering these issues for the first time and it’s fun. The second issue features more full color glossy pages. The front and back covers are actually gatefolds with two fold out posters for Arion and Iczer 1. Again, do yourself a favor and read the Editorial page and the Back Page Comments. Such passion and dedication. A complete difference from my experience with Mixx Zine.
Highlights:
- Four titles are highlighted in this issue.
- Arion
- Aura Battler Dunbine – Long one including world guide, character profiles, and episode summaries for 1-27
- Bubble Gum Crisis
- Iczer 1 Act II
- Ad for the Harmony Gold – Robotech Soundtrack Album – Since it’s 1987 – don’t know if its the cassette, CD…or vinyl. Vinyl sounds of “We Will Win” would be cool.
- Brief articles for Devil Man and Kamen Rider Black
- Interview with Executive Editor of Animage Magazine – Hideo Ogata
- US Renditions ad for Fight!! Iczer-One – through Books Nippan – if you listen to Anime News Network’s ANNCast, take a listen to the interview with David Keith Riddick, one of the founders of US Renditions and listed in this ad as the contact for individual sales and fan club director.
Lord above, I still have my copy of this. Finding info on anime was hard at that time, and Animag was a goldmine. The second issue is especially pretty, since, IIRC, they had to go back and forth between black and white and color for awhile.
I never did get that Robotech BGM, but judging by the picture, I think it must have been an actual record. You don’t see the word “album” used much these days. I do remember that I carefully filled out the survey and sent it in.
Animag was a terrific fanzine, made with a lot of care and heart. I think I have the first dozen issues, and no, they are not for sale. Sorry, guys.
Awesome stuff.
The interview with Ogata where they’re talking about OVAs is really interesting, especially considering that format peaked numbers-wise in the next couple of years after this interview.
The Robotech BGM Collection soundtrack would have been vinyl, since the the ordering information refers to it as a record (not a CD or cassette).
Plus a quick look finds https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotech_music
“This vinyl record from U.S. Renditions was the only LP release of the Robotech soundtrack in North America.” Article has additional details plus track list.
My viewing of Animag started with issue 5 on a hit and miss basis as my local comic shop would only get 1 copy for their magazine section. The issue that survives in my collection is number 9 because of the Miyazakai article and the 1990 calendar centre insert (next reusable in 2018).
